The perspectives of the two sides which were mainly the French and the English, were completely different.
French-Catholic and the Métis
To these people Riel was a hero and a leader because he was standing up for the rights of the people, all the while protecting the French language as well.
These people also felt that Thomas Scott deserved to die and that Riel was innocent
English and the Canadian Government
These people felt that Riel should be punished for everything that he has done bad (in their eyes)
To the Canadian government, Riel was a criminal and a traitor
These people also didn't like the Métis ways of life and they wanted Rupert's Land (The Red River Area) to be more like Ontario
Louis Riel's Perspective
Louis himself, thought he was doing nothing wrong and that he did whatever he had to do. He thought of himself as the rightful leader of the Métis people. He stood up for their rights and in his own eyes, there was nothing wrong with they way he did it.
